In the most part, anyone who travels to a foreign country, should use some caution, as you would in any country-there are good and
bad people wherever you go. In American suburbs, the environment tends to be very peaceful, not too noisy, yet it is still necessary
to be aware of your surroundings, so not to get into any trouble, and to stay safe. Also you might want to consider finding someone
who is familiar with the area you are traveling in, for example, places of interest, places to avoid, a taxi driver might be able to
give you such advice. As well as directions on how to get to certain locals, as he or she knows the city very well, you can also ask
just about anyone who works at hotels, or the police, for directions, and other such places to go for sightseeing, and or entertainment,
and how to get there. They'd be more than willing to help you.
If you decide to go out at night, especially if you decide to travel alone, without be accompanied by a friend, then it might be best to
leave any valuables in your hotel or hostel. As not to draw any unwanted attention, also don't carry cash on your person, as you cannot
replace cash once it's been stolen. If your credit cards or ATM debit card is stolen, due to a mugging (robbery), then they can be easily
replaced. If someone approaches you, with the intent on robbing you, then do whatever the person says, as it could prove not to be in your
best interest to resist. After the person leaves, call 911 or go to the local police station, and make a report on what happened.
There are some serious problems to consider in much bigger cities, which are consequently the major-most-visited tourist destinations,
where tourists are easy targets for thieves who prey on the carefree and helpless visitors. If you hire a car, then you need to park where
there's enough light, as to discourage a would be attacker. If you can don't leave any valuables inside your car, if you do hide it or put
it in the trunk. If something bad occurs, just contact the police as soon as possible. If your automobile is involved in an accident call
the police. If it runs out of gas (petrol), get to the nearest gas station or petrol station. Accept any help from strangers, if they seem
to be honest, and kind. One last thing, homeless people are not one country's problem, but there are homeless in every country. Don't imitate
or have conversation with them, also don't give them any money, it allows them to keep this lifestyle. They are human, but the people
who are on the street maybe not be of sound mind. They may present a danger for anyone who helps or shows kindness.
Since September 11th of 2001, security at all greyhound bus depots, Amtrak stations, and most of all at international airports, has tightened,
and has gotten much stricter. So, you should expect to be delayed for longer than normal, and searches are going to be commonplace.
It is one means of improving security, and to make sure that you are safe, during you stay here.
