Getting Around Los Angeles

Getting Around By Car
Need we tell you that Los Angeles is a car city? Los Angeles has a large network of well-maintained freeways connecting this urban sprawl. You have to make sense of the system and learn some patience for dealing with the traffic. The golden rule of driving in Los Angeles is: allow more time to get to your destination than you think you might need, especially during morning and evening rush hours. If you just figure that no matter where you will be going it takes 45 minutes this is a good rule.

Renting a Car in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is one of the cheapest places in America to rent a car. National car-rental companies normally rent economy- and compact-class cars for about $35 per day and $120 per week with unlimited mileage. Not a bad idea.

Rules for driving in Los Angeles
Don't drive from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m., when the morning rush hour is at its most intense.
Don't drive from 5 to 7 p.m., during the evening rush hour.
Figure about 40 minutes to get anywhere,
Avoid the freeway, except in the middle of the day, and the 405- it's crowded even at 3 a.m.
Avoid the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes have enough people in the car. Fines are steep.
When the light turns yellow, put a brake on it. Some L.A. intersections have cameras that flash right when the light turns red to catch people running through it. Yes, they even trace rental-car license plates.
KWB News Radio (980 AM). The station has traffic updates every 10 minutes.
Above all, drive defensively! The term "road rage" was started here.

Parking in Los Angeles
Pedestrians have the right-of-way. Be sure to read carefully all signs that say what days or hours you may park. Illegally parked vehicles get tickets very quickly and may be towed away. A red curb means no parking. A green curb means parking for a very limited time. A white curb is for loading and unloading passengers only. Parking is generally available in lots or garages. Prices vary widely. Many restaurants offer valet parking for a nominal fee.

With all of that being said that's a quick look in to driving in Los Angeles.
