If you are really looking for a fantastic nightlife of which includes meeting up with some good-looking guys/girl, and having a good time, and such, then you might want to explore the Sunset Strip West, which starts from where L.A. and Hollywood meet, and ends at the ocean.
Somewhere in the middle of these two points, you will be happy to that continuous queue (line) of bars/pubs line the street on both sides.
On the other hand, if you prefer taking in an entertaining and often than not great live performance, then you would fair better by going online and going to Ticketmaster.com, there you can purchase tickets for all events coming to L.A., and so in advance.
You may also check in the LA weekly newspaper, as it contains a complete list of all major events, for instance, concerts, theatre shows, opera, and bar/pub scenes, etc.
The Lava Lounge
It is situated in a small shopping center, though it may be a tiki bar/pub, it is worth checking out, simply because of the name alone.

The Ivar
It is a restaurant /club bar pub, which has a real industrial look and feel about it, and the people in the crowd look hot! Almost everyone is asked to be outside as to form an imaginary queue (line).
If you plan on actually making it inside, had better be there by 9pm or 9:15pm, at the latest.
This is a great place to grab a bite to eat, and a beer, dance, and mingle.
But be mindful of the extremely strict dress code enforced here.
No jeans or sneakers are allowed.

The Whiskey (A GO GO)
More rock and roll history has taken place in this one building than in most of the cities throughout the US, as a whole.
There are the Go-Go girls which dance in metal cages, and wear mini skirts.
It was established in the early 1960's, and a mad craze of national chains Whiskey a GO GOs sprung up.
By the way, during the time when the Doors were popular, and climbing up the charts, they performed here rather frequently.
Just about all the major and not so major acts played here at one time or another, throughout the 1960's. And nearly every night, a different act can be seen.
